- Palin = Again
- Opsia = Seeing
The word palinopsia means to see something again, but what does that mean?
An essential process for vision is a bit like the refresh button on a computer. To see something new, what you were looking at before needs to be removed. Your brain does this many times a second, removing the previous image and replacing it with the new one, so vision feels fluid and continuous.
When that process is not working typically, it can lead to a condition called palinopsia, where the previous image lingers, trails, or forms a temporary ghostly translucent presence.
For example, when watching television (see image), and the scene changes, the image from before may temporarily still remain visible in a number of different ways, depending on how the person has been affected.
We have heard a number of people with CVI recognise palinopsia in themselves when it is described to them.
